Demands democracy and roadblocks, Pakistan’s capital on high alert!

Tensions in Pakistan are rising while Islamabad, the capital, gets ready for a significant political confrontation. Proponents of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) are supposed to march for democracy and the release of their leader; but, the government is tightening control with road closures, Section 144, and more security levels.

PTI Protest: Call to Change or Insurrection

Under custody now, former Prime Minister Imran Khan has urged his supporters to march toward Islamabad on November 24 in demand of democratic and judicial reforms. Meanwhile, the government regards this activity as a threat to national security. Declaring the protest “insurrection,” Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has gone so far as to charge the PTI of meddling with federal affairs.

Section 144: Government’s Response and Challenges

The Islamabad government has made every effort to deter the expected protests:
Between November 23 and 25 Punjab and Islamabad forbid public events, demonstrations, and gatherings under Section 144.
Using containers, major highways and motorways including M-1 (Islamabad-Peshawar) and M-2 (Islamabad-Lahore) have been blocked, so seriously disrupting traffic.
For the planned march, Rawalpindi to Islamabad’s metro bus service will remain off-running.

Most people view Islamabad these days as fortified to uphold law and order.
About 30,000 more troops joining Islamabad police come from the Sindh, Punjab, and Frontier Corps.
To silence any disturbance, security teams carry shotguns, rubber bullets, and tear gas shells.
Strategic fortification with barriers at almost forty points has been done on key sites in Rawalpindi and Islamabad.

Chaos Over Punjab, City under Siege

Container sealings have blocked Interchanges for Faizpur, Kot Abdul Malik, and Kala Shah Kaku in Lahore.
Roads leading from Shahdara Ravi Bridge, Saggian Ravi Bridge, and Imamia Colony remain closed. Passengers at three Faizabad bus terminals have been left stranded.

Authorities call attention to security concerns and warn that mass events could be used by terrorist groups. Armed with slingshots and sticks, intelligence analysis shows that protestors may resort to violence, so endangering public safety.

Khan’s legal challenges still pose a significant barrier even now, even as the PTI advocates his release picks momentum. Well-known cases still unresolved mean his release date is yet unknown. Should Khan be released, the ongoing narrative gets even more erratic since Bushra Bibi, his wife, says the protest date could change.
