Mahira Khan honored in UK Parliament for cinema and diplomacy.

Renowned Pakistani actress Mahira Khan was recently honoured in the UK Parliament for her significant contributions to global cinema and her role as a cultural ambassador. The award ceremony, held at the House of Commons, was hosted by UK Member of Parliament Afzal Khan and supported by a range of cross-party parliamentarians, celebrating Mahira’s impact on cultural exchange and women’s empowerment.

During the event, Mahira expressed her gratitude to the many individuals who have supported her throughout her career. She shared that, growing up in Karachi in a Pashtun family, she was the first in her family to travel abroad alone, an experience that helped her build strength and independence. She also credited her parents for their unwavering focus on providing equal education to their children, a value that has been a driving force in her life.

Mahira emphasized that she does not consider herself “self-made,” as she believes many people—mentors, directors, friends, and family—have contributed to her success. “I’ve stood on the shoulders of teachers, directors, fans, and mentors who made everything possible,” she told the audience at the House of Commons.

After receiving the award, Mahira spoke to the media, expressing her happiness in receiving the recognition, especially as it celebrates women’s empowerment. She reflected on her mission to create opportunities for other women in the entertainment industry, noting the significant progress in Pakistan’s showbiz sector in recent years, particularly in areas like gender equality and pay parity. She also thanked her family, colleagues, and friends for their constant support.

Prominent figures attended the ceremony including Dr. Sarah Naeem, the High Commissioner, Atta Haq (Chairman of the Labour Asians Society), Shafiq Shahzad (Trade and Investment Minister), and Manish Tiwari (co-chair of the Labour Asians Society), alongside many public figures and community leaders.

MP Afzal Khan praised Mahira’s achievements, highlighting her role as a trailblazer for women and an inspiration to young women worldwide. “Mahira Khan’s success story shows that despite obstacles, women can achieve their dreams,” he remarked. He also commended her for breaking stereotypes and representing Pakistan on the international stage, demonstrating that dedication and resilience can lead to remarkable success.

Dr. Naeem applauded Mahira for using her platform to advocate for gender equality in the entertainment industry, where such issues are still prevalent. “She has used her voice to support women’s rights and gender equality,” Dr. Naeem said, noting that Mahira’s influence has encouraged women globally to pursue their dreams with confidence.

As the first Pakistani actress to receive such an honour in the British Parliament, Dr. Naeem described the award as a global recognition of Mahira’s contributions to the arts and advocacy for gender equality.

A representative of the Labour Asians Society highlighted Mahira’s efforts in promoting Pakistani culture internationally. “She has helped challenge stereotypes and foster a more inclusive representation of South Asian voices in media,” they said. Through her work, Mahira has showcased the richness of Pakistani heritage and helped bridge cultural gaps, making global connections with audiences.

Tiwari, co-chair of the Labour Asians Society, added that Mahira serves as a role model for women across South Asia, including in India and Afghanistan, noting her advocacy for mental health and women’s rights as key parts of her influence.

Trade Minister Shafiq Shahzad also celebrated Mahira’s success in films such as Quaid-e-Azam Zindabad and The Legend of Maula Jatt, as well as her role as producer of the sports web series Baarwan Khiladi. “She has significantly contributed to the development of Pakistani cinema and the economy. Mahira Khan is a true icon,” he said.
