PPP-PML-N Alliance at Risk Amid Rising Tensions

PPP-PML-N Alliance at Risk Due to Unmet Expectations

Senior PPP leader Hassan Murtaza recently warned that the ongoing alliance between the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) is in jeopardy unless the latter addresses PPP’s reservations and involves them in policymaking. Murtaza’s comments highlight the growing tensions between the two parties, with PPP feeling sidelined in critical decisions. This disagreement could lead to the unraveling of the PPP-PML-N alliance, which may not survive if the situation does not improve.

    Unmet Agreements Strain the Alliance

The PPP has repeatedly expressed frustration over the PML-N’s failure to honor written agreements between the parties. In June, PPP’s parliamentary leader in Punjab, Ali Haider Gilani, pointed out that despite a formal pact, the PML-N was backing out of commitments, particularly regarding the inclusion of PPP in key administrative decisions and the posting of officials in Multan and Rahim Yar Khan—regions where PPP has more lawmakers.

    Policy Decisions and Internet Restrictions

Hassan Murtaza highlighted that PPP had not been consulted on vital policy decisions, particularly in agriculture, which contradicted PPP’s ideology. He also criticized the government’s approach to internet restrictions, stating that such measures punished responsible users while failing to address the root issues. Murtaza emphasized that PPP advocates for a code of conduct in the digital space, in line with its policy values.

Internal PML-N Struggles Affect the Alliance

Murtaza also referred to internal conflicts within the PML-N, particularly concerning favoritism. He stated that these issues should not impact the implementation of their written agreements. For the PPP-PML-N alliance to survive, Murtaza stressed that the PML-N must fulfill its obligations and resolve internal disputes. The PPP’s loyalty lies with the PML-N, not individual leaders like Maryam Nawaz, and they expect the alliance to be respected and upheld.

In conclusion, the PPP-PML-N alliance is at a critical point, and unless the PML-N addresses PPP’s concerns, the coalition’s survival is uncertain.
