In a significant development for Karachi’s public transportation system, Sindh Transport and Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon announced on January 9, 2025, that the provincial government plans to introduce double-decker buses on the city’s roads later this year.
Minister Memon revealed that preparations for the procurement of these buses are already underway. The double-decker buses are expected to operate on Karachi’s Sharae Faisal, a major thoroughfare connecting key areas of the city. This initiative aims to modernize public transport in Karachi, offering citizens an affordable and comfortable travel option.
The introduction of double-decker buses is part of the Sindh government’s broader efforts to enhance the urban transport system. In October 2024, Minister Memon announced plans to procure 50 new buses for the People’s Bus Service, emphasizing the importance of swift implementation to meet the city’s growing transport needs.
Additionally, the Sindh government is working on other transport projects, including the Malir Expressway, which is scheduled for inauguration by Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari within two days. The government is also focusing on completing the Jam Sadiq Bridge within eight months and has introduced Electric Vehicle (EV) buses and women-specific buses as part of its commitment to modernizing public transport.
The introduction of double-decker buses is expected to alleviate traffic congestion and provide a more efficient mode of transportation for Karachi’s residents. The Sindh government’s efforts reflect a commitment to improving urban infrastructure and enhancing the quality of life for the city’s inhabitants.
