Tom Cruise Receives Distinguished Public Service Award from US Navy
Tom Cruise was honored with the prestigious Distinguished Public Service (DPS) Award by the United States Navy on Tuesday in a ceremony held in London. The award, the highest civilian honor, recognizes his significant contributions to the Navy through his work in film.
US Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro presented the award to Cruise, praising his efforts in inspiring generations to serve in the Navy and Marine Corps. Del Toro highlighted how Cruise’s films have helped raise awareness and appreciation for the sacrifices made by Navy personnel.
“I’m happy I have been able to be a source of inspiration to many of the sailors who serve today or have served in the past,” Cruise said in response. He acknowledged that the recognition was a team effort, crediting the cast and crew for their role in bringing his films to life.
Cruise, 62, also shared his deep respect for the servicemen and women, stating, “To lead is to serve. And I know that to my core. And I see that in the servicemen and women.” Standing next to Del Toro, he received a certificate and medal as part of the ceremony.
Best known for his role as a Navy fighter pilot in Top Gun (1986) and its 2022 sequel Top Gun: Maverick, Cruise has played a key role in boosting the Navy’s public image. Top Gun: Maverick grossed over $1 billion worldwide, further cementing his influence. Cruise’s work on the original Top Gun film also contributed to a surge in Navy pilot recruitment at the time.
In 2020, Cruise and Top Gun producer Jerry Bruckheimer were named Honorary Naval Aviators, recognizing their long-lasting contributions to the Navy’s image and legacy.
