In a press statement on Sunday, the Professional Squash Association (PSA) announced that Pakistani squash legend Jansher Khan was admitted into the Hall of Fame at the Hong Kong Football Club.

Khan and Malaysian squash star Nicol David, who held the World No. 1 title for 108 months, received recognition.

The PSA Hall of Fame has recognized David and Khan as the third and fourth inductees, as the Hong Kong Squash Open, scheduled from December 2 to 8, approaches. The PSA Hall of Fame established this initiative earlier this year to honor the most influential figures in the sport.

David and Khan are joining inaugural PSA Hall of Fame members Susan Devoy and Jahangir Khan as the society pays tribute to its most esteemed figures. Devoy hails from New Zealand, while Jahangir shares the same nation as Jansher.

    Jansher’s Achievements

During the 1980s and 1990s, Jansher Khan played a pivotal role in establishing Pakistan’s dominance in the sport, securing eight World Championships, which is a men’s record, along with six British Open championships.

PSA stated that Khan holds the record for the most professional titles, totaling 99. He held the World No. 1 ranking for a total of 97 months.

“I feel very happy because Hong Kong is my second home, and I played the Hong Kong Open for many years and won eight Hong Kong Opens, so Hong Kong is really the best place for me,” Khan added. I’m excited to visit my old pals in Hong Kong. I am truly honored to receive this award.

With an impressive eight World Championship titles and a 108-month reign as World No. 1, David is considered one of the greatest squash players of all time. The news release highlighted that she has secured five British Open titles and two gold medals at the Commonwealth Games.

After retiring, David initiated the Squash for Development program with the support of the PSA Foundation through the Nicol David Organization.  In 2021, the 41-year-old became a member of the Laureus World Sports Academy, which consists of 69 athletic icons.

“After achieving so much in my squash career, it’s simple to overlook your accomplishments until an honor like this presents itself.” When you express, ‘This is it!’ David expressed his gratitude, stating, “I’m truly honored, and I want to thank PSA for this recognition.”

Since retiring, many things have changed, but starting my own foundation, the Nicol David Organization, has been the most fulfilling experience of my life.  We are committed to supporting children through athletics and education, as well as assisting communities and families. We are excited to introduce the Mothers Program. Our goal is to give back, and squash has taught me valuable lessons that I hope to pass on to the next generation.

    PSA Chief Executive Alex

Alex Gough stated, “Nicol and Jansher are two of squash’s most iconic figures and have created a lasting legacy.”

“Nicol’s nine-year reign at the top of the world rankings is unmatched, inspiring so many squash players in Malaysia and around the world.” It was wonderful to see her appointed as Deputy Chef de Mission for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games this summer. She is a wonderful sports ambassador.

“Similar to Nicol, Jansher’s name will always be associated with squash, and his achievements in men’s records are remarkable. We enjoyed celebrating both players.”

World No. 1 among Egyptian women Nour El Sherbini thanked David, saying, “Thank you so much for giving me this chance; it’s an honor to share words. Nicol is truly exceptional.

“It was a significant moment to see her, and I never imagined I would have the opportunity to share a court with her.” She was the greatest player ever. I remember thinking, “Oh my God, I’m playing Nicol!” when I first walked on her. She imparted a tremendous deal of knowledge to me.

“Serves as an inspiration to many, myself included, and the game would not be the same without her.” She serves as an inspiration for all, consistently demonstrating excellence with her agility both on and off the court. I appreciate the opportunity you’ve provided, your role as a model for others, your kindness, your support for everyone, and your dedication to this sport.

Top-ranked male player in the world Ali Farag of Egypt remarked, “It’s a really special moment for me to stand here as we honor, in my and many people’s opinion, the greatest squash player of all time: Jansher Khan.”

“Mr. Jansher, on behalf of myself, everyone present here, and the entire squash community and beyond, we extend our heartfelt gratitude for countless reasons.”

Squash has given me much, but being compared to you is the greatest honor.

“This evening, we honor your achievements and the impact you have made.”

Jansher inspired many players, demonstrated “poetry in motion” for the world, and went beyond the sport, Farag stated.
