Among the victims were families from Hyderabad, including 18 members from one extended household, ranging across generations. Many of the pilgrims had been sleeping at the time the crash occurred and were thus unable to escape. The loss has hit deeply at home: relatives in Mehdipatnam, Vidyanagar, Tolichowki, and other neighborhoods gathered, desperate for news.

But incredibly, one man survived. Mohd Abdul Shoaib, 24, of Hyderabad, was sitting next to the driver. In a desperate bid to save his life, he broke a window and jumped out just as the bus erupted in flames. He suffered serious injuries—particularly to the head—and is currently hospitalized in the ICU, receiving treatment in Saudi Arabia.

News of the accident sent shockwaves across India. The Indian Embassy in Riyadh and the Consulate in Jeddah quickly established a 24×7 control room to coordinate with local authorities and update families in a timely manner.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his profound sadness, while External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said that they were in close coordination with Saudi authorities to ensure the dead are treated properly and to provide any help needed. Unanswered Questions: What Went Wrong?

Preliminary reports said the bus, which was travelling late into the night, collided with the tanker around 25 km outside Madinah, in an area called Mufrihat. The fire spread so fast that there was hardly any possibility for evacuation; local authorities think many on board might have been sleeping.

Investigations into the reasons for the crash are continuing, but for many families, the worst has happened. The badly charred remains may need to be identified through DNA testing.

    Grief and Faith Entwined

The cruel hand of fate saw the end of those leaving their city in the quest for spiritual fulfillment, never to return home. Among them were women, children, and entire families bonded by love and faith. The resonance of their loss is felt deeply in every home that waited, prayed, and now mourns.
