Horrific Hong Kong high-rise fire swept through Tai Po district
A horrific Hong Kong high-rise fire swept through seven high-rise apartment buildings in the Tai Po district on Wednesday, turning what had been an ordinary afternoon into a scene of chaos, fear, and tragedy. The uncontrolled flame took the lives of two dozen people, among them a brave firefighter, while many others remained trapped in a terrifying race against time.
The fire broke out in midafternoon and spread with explosive swiftness, fueled by bamboo scaffolding and construction netting wrapped around the exteriors. Materials commonly used to refurbish Hong Kong’s high-rises had turned deadly conduits, carrying the inferno from block to block.

Thick clouds of black smoke soon enveloped the skyline, and residents stared aghast as flames roared up several floors at a time.
Thousands Displaced as Buildings Turn Into Firestorms
The Tai Po housing complex, home to almost 4,800 residents across eight huge towers, rapidly became a disaster zone. Around **700 residents** were urgently evacuated to temporary shelters, many fleeing with nothing but the clothes on their backs.

The video footage from the scene was nothing short of apocalyptic: entire facades glowing orange, windows bursting from the heat, fire consuming apartment after apartment. Fire crews battled from the ground and from towering ladder trucks, directing streams of water into the heart of the blaze as night fell.
Level 5 Alarm Declared as Emergency Teams Rush In
As the fire continued to spread out of control, authorities upgraded the response to a **Level 5 alarm**, the highest category possible. The Hong Kong Fire Services Department deployed an enormous response force 128 fire trucks and 57 ambulances in what became one of the city’s largest firefighting operations in recent memory.
Tragedy even reached the rescue teams despite their heroic efforts. One firefighter was killed in the line of duty, while another was hospitalized, suffering from heat exhaustion. Their bravery was a grim reminder of what they encounter on the job every day to save other people’s lives.
The Most Vulnerable Struggle to Escape
According to Lo Hiu-fung, a member of the Taipo District Council, many trapped victims were elderly residents, who may struggle to evacuate quickly when the fire spread. Some were unable to navigate down smoke-filled corridors, while others were simply overwhelmed by the speed of the disaster.
Authorities confirmed that nine victims died at the scene, while four others succumbed to their injuries after reaching the hospital. An additional 15 people were treated for injuries, some in critical condition.
The emotional impact of the search by families for loved ones was really heartbreaking.
A Community Scarred, Questions Loom
The fire stayed uncontained for hours into the night as rescue teams worked through till late, raising concerns about building safety and fire preparedness, among other concerns, on the role of external construction materials in accelerating such disasters.
The aftermath leaves a community shaken, grieving, and in search of answers.
