Basant Festival Comeback Wrapped in Firm Safety Rules in Punjab

Basant Returns in Punjab After a Quarter-Century — Safety as the Core Thread

Basant, the festival of colors and joy, has finally been officially unbanned by the Punjab government after 25 years. But this revival comes with a clear caveat: celebrate, yes-but celebrate responsibly. As Basant returns in Punjab, authorities are steadfast in ensuring the comeback doesn’t rekindle the tragic accidents that led to the ban.

The news has generated excitement across the region. Basant is more than kite-flying; it’s nostalgia, culture, tradition, and cheer. Still, the new rules signal a strong priority: safety above all.

Basant Festival Comeback Wrapped in Firm Safety Rules in Punjab

Stringent Rules to Keep the Sky Safe

According to SAMAA News, the revised guidelines are aimed at ending dangerous practices that turned celebrations into disasters. Only thread-based string is permitted for flying kites, while metallic, chemical-coated, and razor-sharp strings—long linked to severe injuries—are fully banned.

A major shift is prohibiting any minors below 18 from flying kites. For every minor violating this rule, parents or guardians are held legally liable. This proves a new level of accountability and shows full compliance on the part of the government in such matters.

    Heavy Penalties for Violators

With Basant back, the authorities are leaving no stone unturned to ensure there is no scope for any risk. Violators would be sent to prison for three to five years and a fine to the tune of Rs 20 lakh. The offence was declared non-bailable to indicate the gravity regarding public safety.

To rein in the illegal prepping, selling, and storing of dangerous kite strings before they hit the rooftops, law enforcement has been empowered to search suspicious homes and sites without notice.

Even motorbike riders in the area are supposed to follow strict safety measures during the festival, as flying strings have in the past been responsible for fatal accidents involving riders.

A Festival of Joy — Now Wrapped in Responsibility

The return of Basant is met with excitement and cautious optimism. The moment marks an opportunity for families, kite lovers, and cultural communities to revive iconic skyline celebrations, boost economic activities, and reconnect with cherished traditions in Lahore.

It’s a simple message: Basant will thrive again only when all pledge to be safe, disciplined, and responsible.

The new rules are not intended to dampen enjoyment but to prevent tragedies that once marred celebrations. If all concerned welcome them, Punjab could again witness a lively, safe, and colorful Basant that future generations can enjoy without fear.
