Supreme Court Appoints “Friend of Court” to Verify Imran Khan’s Jail Conditions
In a notable legal move, Pakistan’s Supreme Court has appointed senior lawyer Barrister Salman Safdar as an amicus curiae, or “friend of the court”. To personally inspect the living conditions of incarcerated former Prime Minister Imran Khan. This decision, handed down on Tuesday by a two-member bench led by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi. He aims to provide an independent assessment of Khan’s treatment at Adiala Jail following a wave of concern from his family and the PTI.
From Medical Mysteries to Independent Oversight
The court’s intervention follows a series of conflicting reports regarding Khan’s health. While the government recently confirmed he underwent an eye procedure at PIMS hospital. PTI leadership argued they were kept in the dark about the surgery. Chief Justice Afridi noted that previous reports on Khan’s detention were outdated. Which stems from his time in Attock jail in 2023. By appointing Safdar a lawyer the court stated it has “full faith” in the judiciary is seeking a current, transparent account of the former premier’s surroundings and access to facilities.
A Report Due Under High Scrutiny
Barrister Safdar was directed to visit Adiala Jail immediately on Tuesday afternoon. The Attorney General assuring the court that he would be granted “full access” without being kept waiting at the gates. While Safdar initially asked to expand the report to include Khan’s specific medical status. The Chief Justice clarified that the immediate focus must remain on his general living conditions. The findings are expected to be submitted by Wednesday, potentially setting the stage for further legal arguments regarding prisoner rights and visitation transparency.
