Fernando Alonso’s Likely Retirement in 2026

Fernando Alonso, one of Formula 1’s most accomplished drivers, has revealed that he is likely to retire after the 2026 season. With 32 Grand Prix victories and two World Championships to his name, Alonso’s career has been illustrious, yet the Spaniard feels that 2026 could mark the end of his time in F1.

Alonso’s current contract with Aston Martin extends until the end of the 2026 season, by which time he will be 45. While he has confirmed his commitment to the team for now, he acknowledges that the 2026 season may be his last. The year will coincide with the introduction of new F1 regulations, a time he refers to as “the time of truth” for Aston Martin. The team has high expectations for the new era, especially with the addition of renowned engineer Adrian Newey and a partnership with Honda, Red Bull’s current engine suppliers.

    Fernando Alonso’s Future Beyond 2026

Although Fernando Alonso’s comments suggest that 2026 will likely be his final season, he has left the door open for a possible extension. The driver said that if the season goes well and he is enjoying his time, he could consider racing in 2027. However, he emphasized that his approach will be to treat every race as if it were his last, enjoying every moment and focusing on the present rather than the future.

Alonso’s long-serving manager, Flavio Briatore, echoed similar sentiments, suggesting that the 2026 season would likely be the end of Alonso’s F1 journey, though the final decision will depend on how he feels about racing at that time.

Health Challenges and Preparations for 2025

Alonso also shared that he faced some health challenges toward the end of the 2024 season. He battled an intestinal infection and suffered from back pain and shoulder issues due to the physically demanding nature of the Brazilian Grand Prix. Despite these setbacks, Alonso is determined to be in better physical shape for the 2025 season, setting improved fitness as one of his key goals moving forward.

Throughout it all, Fernando Alonso remains as focused and determined as ever, keeping his eyes on the future while evaluating whether 2026 will be his final year in Formula 1.
