Rakhal Raha, an author and researcher who was concerned with the process of revising textbooks, pointed out that the changes had been part of a campaign to remove “exaggerated and imposed” historical narratives. “The earlier textbooks claimed that Sheikh Mujibur Rahman sent a wireless message declaring independence while in prison, but this could not be established by fact-finding evidence. So, the claim was deleted,” Raha said.

The current textbooks have also omitted Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s title as the “Father of the Nation,” which has ignited debates throughout political and educational circles. The proponents of the Awami League claim that Mujib was once the designer of Bangladesh’s independence and Ziaur Rahman merely acted according to his directions.

    Political Underpinnings and Implications

The decision to give Ziaur Rahman a positive score follows recent initiatives toward changing the dominant public opinion on the country’s iconic leaders of the Liberation War. Specifically, the changes meet official comments on a plan to exclude Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s image from Bangladeshi currency, which indicates another potential change in the country’s icons and the manner of their remembrance.
