Pakistan opener Saim Ayub is heading to London for treatment after suffering an ankle fracture. Initially, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had planned for Ayub to stay with the team and return to Pakistan after the Newlands Test. However, they have now decided to send him straight to London for specialist care. Assistant coach Azhar Mahood, who is with the team in Cape Town, will accompany him.
The PCB has faced criticism in the past for how it handled player injuries. A key example is Shaheen Afridi, who was initially allowed to travel with the team before being sent to London for treatment after much public outcry. With Saim Ayub, the PCB wants to avoid a repeat of this situation. PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi reassured fans that Ayub would receive top-notch care, saying he would be treated at one of the best hospitals in England. An immediate appointment with orthopedic specialists has already been arranged, and all necessary resources will be used to aid his recovery.
Ayub’s injury happened during a match when he was chasing a ball with Aamer Jamal. After Jamal relayed the ball, Ayub lost his balance and twisted his ankle. He collapsed in pain, and the physio quickly rushed to him. Despite receiving treatment on the field, Ayub couldn’t put weight on his right ankle and was visibly upset as he was carried off on a stretcher. Later, he was seen using crutches and wearing a medical boot. The PCB confirmed that Ayub would be sidelined for six weeks, putting his availability for the Champions Trophy, starting February 19, in doubt.
