Urgent Measures to Combat Smog
Punjab Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb has rolled out a set of urgent measures to tackle the escalating smog crisis in the province, which includes declaring a health emergency in Lahore and Multan.
During a press conference in Lahore, Marriyum highlighted the seriousness of the situation, noting that air quality indices (AQI) in multiple cities, including Lahore, have reached dangerous levels, with Lahore’s AQI soaring to a concerning 2800.
She mentioned that the countries that reduced smog got a ton of support from their citizens, encouraging everyone to chill at home on Saturday and Sunday. She also emphasized how actors, artists, and the media play a crucial role in addressing the health crisis.
Marriyum mentioned that she donned a mask and ventured out in Lahore, where she observed people enjoying themselves. Many individuals fail to recognize that smog can be lethal; they commute in cars and on motorcycles without wearing masks. “The private sector must enforce a mask ban,” she emphasized.
To everyone who disagrees, I encourage you to come together to tackle the issue of smog. “Given the situation, the decisions will take effect starting next week,” the minister stated.

The minister has shared the following measures in response to the increasing smog in Lahore and other cities across Punjab:
Since Friday, all brick kilns and furnace-based plants in Lahore and Multan have closed to reduce emissions.

Marriyum Aurangzeb also mentioned that more than 40,000 people affected by smog are receiving treatment in hospitals. She encouraged everyone to reduce outdoor activities and to wear masks, especially when riding motorcycles. Marriyum expressed her desire to appear in the Lahore High Court, which is currently addressing a smog-related case. She updated the judge on the government’s actions.
“Right now, our health situation has become a serious smog crisis,” she emphasized, noting that a public campaign called ‘Detox Lahore’ has been initiated to spread awareness about smog and its dangerous effects on health. “She emphasized that individuals should only use motorcycles for essential tasks and must wear masks while doing so.”
Aurangzeb noted that the chief minister started addressing the smog issue in March and developed a strategy by taking into account all factors that contribute to smog. The Punjab government has rolled out a 10-year policy aimed at tackling climate change and smog. This plan involves the conversion of brick kilns to zigzag technology, which comes after the closure of 800 kilns to reduce emissions. Additionally, it promotes eco-friendly transportation by introducing e-bikes and electric buses in Lahore and offers subsidized super seeders to farmers at 60% of the price to help reduce stubble burning.
