His fortunes turned when he was tasked with the responsibility to manage the grand expansion projects of Makkah’s Masjid al-Haram and Madinah Masjid al-Nabawi. They were not usual projects; they were giant endeavors that needed not only engineering skills but also deep spiritual awareness.
Kamal procured Greek special heat-absorbing marble that was one of the hallmark characteristics of his work. The marble was special because it stayed cool even under the blistering Arabian sun, allowing millions of pilgrims to pray comfortably. His attention to detail and innovation ensured that the holy mosques were secure, practical, and enduring.
Refusing Wealth for the Sake of Allah
What made Dr. Kamal Ismail’s legacy even more remarkable was his humility. When payment for his services on the mosques was offered to him, he declined. To him, being able to contribute towards the expansion of the holiest sites in Islam was an honor, not a profession.
He famously made the statement that he wanted no compensation other than Allah’s pleasure. At a time when buildings projects tend to earn vast sums of money and fame, his spurning of fame and money is a great reminder of selflessness.
A Life of Worship and Simplicity
Behind the success was a very personal pilgrimage. Following his wife’s death, Dr. Kamal opted for a life of worship and simplicity, keeping himself away from material comforts of this world. He continued to be devoted to prayer, contemplation, and service, spending over a century with humility as his friend.
Unlike most famous architects, he never wanted his name inscribed on stone. Rather, he preferred to be a quiet caretaker of the holy places where millions still pray.
