From patience to success: Kamindu Mendis’ impressive start in Test cricket.
Kamindu Mendis has made a strong start in his red-ball career, scoring three centuries in four Test matches.
After the first match against England in Manchester, Kamindu Mendis had a Test average of 92.16. This is only behind Sir Don Bradman for players with over 500 runs.
Mendis impressed on his debut in 2022. He filled in for Dhananjaya de Silva, who tested positive for Covid, during the match against Australia in Galle. He scored 61 in his first game. This helped Sri Lanka win by an innings and 39 runs.

Mendis showed great promise, but he had to wait two more years to play Test cricket for Sri Lanka again. During this time, he stayed focused and determined, preparing for his next chance.
“I knew the batting lineup was strong, but I aimed to do my best with the opportunity I had,” Kamindu said on Tuesday. I left the team after that. I don’t consider it a mistake.
“You need to make different decisions to balance a team. I stepped in because Dhananjaya had Covid.” I had to step aside when he came back. That makes sense.
I didn’t play, but I was part of the squad and travelled with the team on almost every tour. Going on many tours with experienced players helped me perform well in my first few innings.
Mendis got another chance this year against Bangladesh. He took it and scored centuries in both Tests. He scored 367 runs, took three wickets, and won the Player of the Series award. His performance was outstanding.
Mendis impressed against England, even while batting outside the subcontinent for the first time. Chris Woakes got him out for only 12 in the first innings. In the second, Mendis was focused and scored 113 runs.
Mendis has moved up eight spots to a career-high No. 36 in the latest ICC Men’s Test Batters’ Rankings due to his performances.
