Pakistani physician Dr. Maryam Shoukat died in the US!

Pakistani physician Dr. Maryam Shoukat died in the US Just before her life-saving liver transplant

The medical community in Pakistan and America is grieving the premature death of Dr. Maryam Shoukat, who was a 27-year-old Pakistani doctor, studying for her residency in America. Dr. Maryam died in Newark, New Jersey, just half an hour before she was scheduled for a life-saving liver transplant.

Her account has left many hearts heartsick, not just because of her sudden passing but because of the immense effort that was made to save her life.

    Sudden onset of medical emergency

This month, Dr. Maryam was hospitalized at Rutgers University Hospital following acute failure of her liver. Physicians promptly announced that her only hope for survival was an immediate liver transplant.

Her husband, Dr. Hamza Zafar, lost no time and contacted the Association of Physicians of Pakistani Descent of North America (APPNA), asking for assistance with the sky-high expenditures. A stunning display of solidarity followed.

A Community’s Race to Save One of Its Own

APPNA quickly put out an emergency appeal for funds, and in a matter of 24 hours, $273,000 was collected. As of today, the amount is nearing $400,000.

Moved by the unprecedented support, the hospital also consented to reduce the transplant fee from $900,000 to $450,000. APPNA contributed the initial $100,000 on the spot, and Dr. Maryam’s name was put on the official transplant waiting list.

A matching donor liver was soon discovered, filling her family, friends, colleagues, and the larger Pakistani community with the hope that she would be granted a second chance at life.

    The Sudden Twist of Fate

Just as the doctors had prepared her for the transplant, disaster struck. Dr. Maryam’s precarious condition deteriorated quickly, and she died 30 minutes before the operation could take place.

It was a bitter irony in a tale that had raised such hope. Her life was cut short on the brink of survival, and she left behind a sea of sorrow on two continents.

    Remembering Her Devotion and Aspirations

As per APPNA General Secretary Dr. Muhammad Sanaullah and President Dr. Humera Qamar, and prominent doctors Dr. A. Fazal Akbar, Dr. Zeeshan, Dr. Babar Rao, Dr. Fateh Shehzad, and Dr. Siddique Khurram, the community united for one purpose—to save the life of a young doctor who had dedicated her life to saving others.

Their words were filled with profound sadness: “She came with the dream of healing others, but ultimately she needed healing herself.”

The story of Dr. Maryam is not one of loss—of tragedy—it is a story about courage, compassion, and the sublime solidarity of a community that would not give up until the end.

A Legacy of Hope and Sacrifice

While her life ended tragically, Dr. Maryam Shoukat’s legacy will continue to inspire. She represents countless young doctors who dedicate their lives to serving humanity, often at the cost of their own well-being.

Her journey reminds us of the fragility of life, the importance of community support, and the unshakable spirit of those who devote themselves to healing others.

For her friends, co-workers, and wider Pakistani community, she will forever be remembered as a shining spirit who offered hope—even in the last few hours.
