PTI Criticizes Information Minister Over Military Court Trials

Sheikh Waqas Akram Slams Attaullah Tarar’s Stance on Military Courts

PTI Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram has strongly criticized Information Minister Attaullah Tarar for advocating the trial of civilians in military courts, accusing him of tarnishing Pakistan’s democratic and constitutional reputation globally. Akram’s remarks came after 25 PTI activists were sentenced to imprisonment by a military court for their involvement in the May 9, 2023 riots.

    International Concerns Over Military Trials

On December 21, the military’s media wing announced that the PTI activists had been sentenced to rigorous imprisonment ranging from two to 10 years. The UK and European Union raised concerns over the transparency and legality of civilian trials in military courts, stating that such proceedings violate Pakistan’s obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

During a press conference, Minister Tarar defended the military trials, stating that those who attack military installations, regardless of whether they are civilians, will be prosecuted. He also assured that the legal process, including Supreme Court orders, guarantees fair trials with access to counsel, family visits, records, and appeals.

    Akram Criticizes Government’s Position

In response, Akram described Tarar’s press conference as “a collection of lies and superstitions,” accusing the current administration of prioritizing survival over the country’s constitutional and democratic values. He emphasized that the use of military courts had severely damaged Pakistan’s image, stating that the government had “sold the constitution, law, democracy, and the fundamental rights of the people.”

    Support from International Community

Akram welcomed the international scrutiny of the trials, particularly from the US, UK, and EU, and highlighted that these nations’ concerns are rooted in a commitment to human rights and democracy. He stressed that the PTI values international support for human rights and the rule of law, asserting that such criticism should not be dismissed as foreign interference.

    PTI’s Call for Investigation

Akram further urged Minister Tarar to investigate the events of May 9, 2023, and address allegations of electoral fraud in the February 2023 General Elections.
