A Groundbreaking Step Towards Safer Campuses – Punjab installs Panic Button in Women Colleges and University

In a historic initiative to bolster campus security and empower female students, the Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA) has initiated the installation of panic buttons in women’s colleges and universities in Lahore. The project, undertaken at the behest of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, is a turning point in public safety, indicative of the provincial government’s determination to develop safe educational spaces for young women.

First Phase: 39 Institutions Equipped

The initial phase of the project has already installed panic button systems in 39 colleges and universities for women in Lahore. But this is only the first step. The PSCA has also made public a sweeping expansion plan to include over 450 women’s institutions all over Punjab in the next few months.

How the Panic Button Works

The system has been designed keeping in mind simplicity and urgency. Connected straight to the PSCA’s central control room, every panic button provides instant contact with the Virtual Women Police Station. The instant a button is pressed, the system initiates an instant police response, making sure that assistance is sent without delay.

This system is particularly beneficial in situations where mobile phones might not be readily available or feasible, offering students a safety net in times of need.

A Wider Safety Network Across Punjab

The panic button scheme is not confined to educational institutions. The scheme is already being run at 122 places in Lahore and 101 places in other cities, as per PSCA. Widening this system to campuses represents a vital turn in the evolution of Punjab’s public safety system, wherein young women tend to struggle with balancing professional dreams with issues related to personal safety.
