On Tuesday, South Korea President Yoon Suk Yeol announced martial law during a late-night address that was broadcast live on YTN television. He stated his intention to eliminate what he described as “shameless pro-North Korean anti-state forces.”
He did not mention any particular threat from the nuclear-armed North; rather, he concentrated on his domestic political rivals.
The unexpected move disrupted the nation, which, having faced authoritarian regimes in its early years, has been a democracy since the 1980s. The Korean won experienced a significant decline against the US dollar.
The White House has not yet provided a response to the request for comment.
Yoon stated that he felt compelled to take this action to protect free and constitutional order, claiming that opposition parties have effectively held the parliamentary process hostage, leading the country into a crisis.
“I am declaring martial law to safeguard the free Republic of Korea from the threat posed by North Korean communist forces, to eliminate the reprehensible pro-North Korean anti-state elements that are undermining the freedom and happiness of our citizens, and to uphold the free constitutional order,” Yoon stated.
“Tanks, armoured personnel carriers, and soldiers armed with guns and knives will govern the nation,” stated Lee Jae-myung, leader of the opposition Democratic Party, which holds the majority in parliament, during a livestream online.
The economy of the Republic of Korea is on the brink of irreversible collapse. Dear citizens, I kindly invite you to attend the National Assembly.
This week, Yoon referenced a motion from the opposition Democratic Party, which holds a majority in parliament, to impeach several of the nation’s leading prosecutors and to reject a government budget proposal.
On Monday, South Korea ministers expressed their discontent regarding the opposition DP’s decision last week to cut over 4 trillion won from the government’s budget proposal. Yoon stated that such action weakens the fundamental operations of government administration.
