Valtteri Bottas to Return to Mercedes as Reserve Driver for 2025
Valtteri Bottas will return to Mercedes as a reserve driver for the 2025 Formula One season, the team announced on Thursday. Bottas, 35, raced for Mercedes from 2017 to 2021, where he was a key teammate to Lewis Hamilton. After his time at Mercedes, Bottas moved to Alfa Romeo, which later became Sauber.
During his five years with Mercedes, Bottas secured 10 Grand Prix wins and finished on the podium 58 times, helping the team maintain its dominance in F1. However, after joining Sauber, Bottas finished 10th in his first season, though he didn’t score any points in that campaign.
Now, Bottas will return to Mercedes as a third driver for the 2025 season. In a statement, he expressed his excitement: “I’m happy to finally answer the question I’ve posed over the past month. Returning home to the Mercedes family as third driver for 2025 is what’s next and I couldn’t be more pleased.” He also thanked team principal Toto Wolff and the entire Mercedes team for welcoming him back.
For the 2025 season, Mercedes will feature George Russell and 18-year-old debutant Kimi Antonelli, with Lewis Hamilton making the switch to Ferrari. Bottas’ return to Mercedes in the reserve driver role brings a wealth of experience to the team, and his presence will be an asset as Mercedes looks ahead to the upcoming season.
Bottas’ history with Mercedes and his impressive racing record make him an invaluable part of the team as they prepare for the challenges of 2025.
