Former South African captain AB de Villiers has hinted at a potential return to competitive cricket. Expressing his desire to rediscover the thrill of the game. However, he emphasized that he does not want to raise unrealistic expectations among his fans regarding a full international comeback.
De Villiers also made it clear that he will not be participating in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) or in South Africa’s T20 franchise league, SA20.
Recent Training Sessions
The 40-year-old cricketer shared that recent training sessions with his children have reignited his passion for the sport. He mentioned that his kids have been encouraging him to return to cricket. His last competitive appearance was in 2021 during the IPL with RCB, and his last international match was in 2018.
“I might play again one day,” de Villiers told journalist Melinda Farrell on her show Running Between The Wickets. “No promises, but I’m starting to feel the urge. My kids are pushing me, and I feel like I could hit the nets with them. If I enjoy it, maybe I’ll play some casual cricket, but nothing serious like the IPL or international tours.”
De Villiers expressed that he’s not aiming for a professional comeback, saying, “I’m doing it for my kids, and I just want to enjoy the game again.” He clarified that his return wouldn’t involve the pressures of the IPL or international commitments.
Throughout his illustrious career, AB de Villiers was widely regarded as one of the finest all-format players of his era, known for his innovative batting and remarkable consistency. With 8,765 runs in Test cricket at an average of 50.66, 9,577 runs in ODIs at 53.50, and a stellar T20I record, he earned the title of Mr. 360 for his versatile shot-making ability.
