Aid Reaches Kurram After Months of Sectarian Conflict

Trucks carrying essential supplies such as food, medicine, and other relief materials have finally arrived in Kurram, a remote district in northwestern Pakistan, following a prolonged blockade, according to local authorities.

The region had been cut off for over three months after violent clashes between Sunni and Shiite tribes led to at least 130 deaths. A key highway to Kurram was shut down during this period. The convoy, which had been waiting for clearance since Saturday, faced delays after gunmen attacked government vehicles, wounding officials tasked with overseeing the aid delivery.

Muhammad Ali Saif, a provincial government spokesman, confirmed that dozens of trucks carrying essential items, including food, medicines, tents, and more, have now reached Kurram.

This breakthrough follows a ceasefire agreement secured by local elders in late December. Since the blockade in October, residents had struggled to access basic necessities, and violence escalated on November 21, when gunmen ambushed a convoy, killing 52 people, mostly Shiite Muslims, over a land dispute.

Kurram has a predominantly Shiite population, although the majority of Pakistan is Sunni, leading to ongoing sectarian violence in the area.
