On Thursday, Imran Khan, the founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), dismissed Barrister Gohar Ali Khan from his position as chairman of the party and proposed Asad Qaiser, a former speaker of the National Assembly, to take his place.
The decision was confirmed by Barrister Ali Zafar, who stated that it was taken to provide experienced leaders with the opportunity to lead the party. This statement was made after a meeting with Imran Khan.
As a result of yet another significant shift, Ali Muhammad Khan was proposed for the position of Secretary General, succeeding Salman Akram Raja. Although initial reports stated Raja had resigned, Barrister Zafar explained that the party founder was the one who dismissed him from his position.
Asad Qaiser and Ali Muhammad Khan have been summoned by Imran Khan to attend a meeting at Adiala Jail to facilitate the completion of the leadership handover.
PTI officials have been criticized for their absence during protests in Islamabad, and the party has been experiencing internal turmoil as a result of the arrest of hundreds of party activists during a crackdown on demonstrations. The reshuffle comes at a time when the PTI leaders have been faced with criticism.
As a result of Imran Khan’s disqualification in the Toshakhana case, Barrister Gohar Ali Khan took over as Chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf in December 2023 without any opposition.
