Israeli Forces in Gaza, to Maintain Security Control Raising Concerns Over Ceasefire Talks
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz confirmed on December 25 that Israeli forces will retain “security control” over Gaza, signaling potential deadlock in ongoing ceasefire negotiations. Katz made these remarks during a visit to a buffer zone near the Gaza-Egypt border, stating that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) would continue to oversee security in the Palestinian territory.
Israel’s Commitment to Security Control in Gaza
The question of Israeli forces remaining in Gaza has been a major point of contention during ceasefire discussions. Hamas seeks an immediate end to the conflict, while Israel insists on removing Hamas from control before considering any ceasefire. Katz’s statement reaffirmed Israel’s position, stating that security in Gaza must remain under IDF control. This stance may complicate ongoing talks, as Israel recently recalled its delegation from discussions in Doha to consult on the progress of the negotiations. The delegation included key officials from the Mossad, Shin Bet, and the IDF.
Progress in Ceasefire-for-Hostages Deal
On December 24, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that progress had been made toward a potential ceasefire-for-hostages deal with Hamas, though he remained uncertain about the timeline. Foreign Minister Gideon Saar described the framework as gradual, starting with a 42-day ceasefire phase. Diaspora Minister Amichai Chikli indicated that this initial phase would involve the release of some hostages, with the potential for a longer-term ceasefire depending on the situation on the ground.
Ongoing Israeli Offensive and Hostage Crisis
The conflict between Israel and Hamas escalated following the October 7, 2023, attack, where Hamas killed approximately 1,200 people and took around 250 hostages. While ceasefire discussions continue, Israel’s military operation in Gaza is expected to persist, as negotiations struggle to bridge the gap between both parties’ demands.
