Ex-Serviceman and Accomplice Sentenced to Life for Kidnapping and Extortion Case
The Crime and Sentencing
In a case spanning 17 years, an anti-terrorism court has sentenced two men, including a retired military officer, to life imprisonment for their role in a kidnapping and extortion case involving a businessman. The convicts, retired Major Nawazish Akbar and civilian Naveed Khan, were found guilty of abducting Sher Bahadur, a businessman, in 2006. The kidnappers extorted a total of Rs16 million from the victim, including Rs7 million in cash and Rs9 million in jewelry, in a kidnapping and extortion case that shocked the local community.
Additional Sentences and Property Forfeiture
The court’s judgment included additional sentences for the two men: three years for wrongful confinement, seven years for robbing the victim’s car, and life imprisonment under Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act. The court also ordered the forfeiture of their property as part of the punishment.
The Background of the Kidnapping and Extortion
The abduction occurred after a business dispute between Nawazish, a former five percent partner in Bahadur’s construction company, and the victim. After failing to settle the financial disagreements, Nawazish, along with accomplices, intercepted the victim’s car and forcibly abducted him. The kidnappers demanded the resolution of the business dispute as a condition for the victim’s release.
Testimony and Financial Exploitation
The victim, in his testimony, revealed a disturbing six-month captivity where he was subjected to financial exploitation and threats. He further claimed that Nawazish had transferred most of the company’s shares and sold its assets during the period of his captivity. The victim’s testimony, supported by extensive documentary evidence, provided a clear picture of the fraud and extortion that transpired in this kidnapping and extortion case.
Delayed Justice and Convictions
Despite the lengthy delay in the case’s progression, caused in part by the involvement of influential individuals, the court concluded that the convicted men were responsible for both the kidnapping and the subsequent financial crimes.
