Lahore to Launch First Electric Taxi Service

The Punjab government has announced the launch of its first electric taxi (e-taxi) service in Lahore, aiming to promote eco-friendly and affordable transportation across the province. The initiative is expected to provide both sustainable travel options and create job opportunities for the youth.

During a seminar organized to discuss the project, representatives from electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing companies showed strong interest, indicating potential private-sector collaboration. Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar has been instructed to speed up the process, with the project set to contribute to economic growth by offering new employment opportunities.

The seminar, which brought together government officials, EV manufacturers, transport companies, and industry experts, focused on key aspects of the e-taxi initiative. Punjab Secretary for Transport and Mass Transit, Ahmed Javed Qazi, provided an overview of the project, discussing vehicle types, pricing structures, operational services, and technical considerations. Proposals for establishing EV charging stations, setting battery standards, and ensuring a steady supply of spare parts were also reviewed.

Minister Akbar emphasized the vision of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, who envisions the e-taxi project as a solution to unemployment while offering high-quality, affordable vehicles for public use. He stated that the initiative would modernize the transportation infrastructure in Lahore and the surrounding areas, while also helping reduce air pollution.

“This e-taxi scheme is a step toward providing affordable and eco-friendly transportation while reducing unemployment,” Akbar remarked. “Lahore and Punjab are swiftly embracing sustainable transportation solutions,” he added.

In a similar development, Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon revealed plans to introduce electric vehicle taxis in Karachi. This initiative also aims to create jobs and reduce pollution, with a special focus on a “pink taxi” service for women, which is set to launch in 2024.
