Malala Yousafzai Returns to Pakistan for Global Education Summit

Malala Yousafzai expressed her deep emotions upon returning to Pakistan to attend a global summit focused on girls’ education in the Islamic world. The Nobel Peace Prize laureate, who was shot by the Taliban in 2012 for advocating girls’ education, arrived in Islamabad for the two-day summit, which seeks to address the ongoing education crisis affecting millions of girls in Muslim-majority countries.

Upon her arrival, Malala Yousafzai told AFP that she was “truly honoured, overwhelmed, and happy” to be back in her homeland. The summit, which began on Saturday, is attended by representatives from various Muslim-majority nations, many of which have millions of girls currently out of school. On Sunday, Malala Yousafzai is set to speak at the event, where she will address the critical issue of girls’ education and emphasize the importance of holding the Taliban accountable for their treatment of Afghan women and girls. She shared her intentions on the social media platform X, stating her focus on advocating for girls’ right to education.

The education minister of Pakistan, Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, revealed that Afghanistan’s Taliban government had been invited to the summit, though there has been no response. Afghanistan remains the only country where girls and women are prohibited from attending school and university. Since the Taliban’s return to power in 2021, their strict interpretation of Islamic law has led to what the United Nations has described as “gender apartheid.”

Pakistan itself faces a significant educational crisis, with over 26 million children out of school, primarily due to poverty. Malala Yousafzai, who survived an assassination attempt by the Pakistani Taliban in 2012, has since become a passionate advocate for girls’ education worldwide and the youngest ever recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize at 17.
