Nationwide Strike Proclaimed by Delivery Workers on Christmas

All-India strike of Delivery Workers on both December 25 and December 31, 2025!

The gig economy in India is growing rapidly, and with a large number of delivery workers on the platforms of swiggy, Zomato, Zepto, Blinkit, Amazon and Flipkart, is about to experience a significant disruption when they go on an all-India strike of delivery workers on both December 25 and December 31, 2025. The strike declared by the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU) and Indian Federation of App-based Transport Workers (IFAT is likely to attract both metro cities and the tier-2 urban centers.

Since millions of customers are using app-based deliveries to receive their goods throughout the holiday season, the timing of the strike reveals the intensity of the demands of the workers and the level of discontent that was brewing in the sector.

The reason why Delivery Workers are out in the Streets

The core of the protest is an increased economic insecurity. According to the delivery partners, their revenues have been continuously decreasing because of the decreased incentives, unclear compensation schemes, and increased fuel and maintenance expenses. Most employees complain of having to work very long hours to earn a livelihood, most of the time at the expense of their wellbeing and family.

Complaints regarding unsafe delivery targets are also incredibly worrying because the targets allegedly compel riders to accelerate through the traffic, which raises the chances of accidents. The labour people claim that the pressure that they are under to achieve unrealistic deadlines is putting customer satisfaction above human safety.

The second argument is related to arbitrary suspensions and the lack of due process

The arbitrary suspension or deactivation of worker accounts is one of the most controversial matters that became the cause of the strike. Gig workers report that even one negative comment left by a client, technical hitches, or even rating can immediately end their income, sometimes without warning or a chance to challenge it.

The absence of transparency and due process has made workers powerless and this has been highlighted by unions as a way of strengthening the imbalance between platforms and those who continue to operate their business.

The Essential Requests by Gig Worker Unions

The demands presented to the organizers of the strike are quite clear and defined to reinstate dignity and justice to gig work:

    • Just and open-minded remuneration systems with foreseeable income.
    • Prior suspension or termination of an account Due process Before a suspension or termination of an account, the affected financier is entitled to receive due process.
    • Less risky models of delivery that do not provoke careless driving.
    • Extensive insurance cover on accidents and health crises.
    • Breaks in work and acceptable working hours that are mandatory.
    • Social security and job security, gig workers are accepted as workers.

Union leaders stress that these demands are not radical ones and are needed to maintain a workforce that drives the digital commerce ecosystem in India.

Provided that the participation is so extensive as expected, the strike would severely impact the logistics of food delivery, the supply of goods, and e-commerce on two of the busiest days in the year. Although the platforms might downsize the effect, the industry observers assume that the protest might compel firms and policy makers to address the long forgotten labor issues.

To customers, the strike can be their wakeup call that there is a human worker driving through traffic, weather, and uncertainty to power every aspect of the app.

The all-India gig workers strike may turn out to be a turning point in the perception and regulation of app-based labor. With the need of recognition, safety, and security among the delivery workers, the success of this movement could define the future of gig employment not only in India, but also in the emerging digital economies.
