PM Shehbaz Sharif Orders Uninterrupted Domestic Gas Supply During Winters

Call for Reforms in Gas Distribution System

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the need for structural reforms in Pakistan’s gas distribution system during a high-level meeting on Friday. The meeting was convened following complaints from domestic consumers about gas shortages, despite the availability of surplus regasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG) in the system.

    Addressing Winter Gas Shortages

Pakistan faces recurring gas shortages, particularly during the winter, as declining domestic production struggles to meet growing demand. PM Sharif directed officials to ensure an uninterrupted gas supply for domestic consumers throughout the winter season, stating it as the government’s top priority.

“Immediate measures must be taken to provide a continuous gas supply to households during winters,” the premier urged, adding that long-term reforms should be implemented to resolve the issue permanently.

    Improved Gas Load Management

Officials informed the prime minister that gas load management had improved compared to the previous year, resulting in reduced load shedding durations. Presently, domestic consumers receive gas from 5 AM to 10 PM daily.

“The power sector is also being supplied gas as per its requirements,” officials briefed. Additionally, all gas fields in the country are operational, contributing to the improved management of supply and demand.

    Consumer Complaint Resolutions

Officials reported that Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) had resolved 93% of consumer complaints, while Sui Southern Gas Company Limited (SSGCL) achieved a 79% resolution rate.

    Challenges in Balochistan

Despite improvements, challenges persist, particularly in Balochistan, which contributes significantly to Pakistan’s domestic gas production. The region often experiences supply disruptions due to attacks on pipelines by separatist groups.

Earlier this week, a pipeline explosion near Quetta disrupted gas supply to several areas in Balochistan. Repairs began promptly after securing the area, but the incident caused considerable inconvenience to residents.

PM Shehbaz Sharif reiterated his commitment to ensuring uninterrupted gas supply to consumers, emphasizing that addressing these issues was crucial for public convenience and economic stability.
