Mera Lyari is a direct response to a problematic Bollywood film called Dhurandhar
In a major cultural statement, the Sindh government unveiled a new film project, “Mera Lyari,” which is a direct response to a problematic Bollywood film called “Dhurandhar.” Some analysts have pointed out that “Dhurandhar” gives a very negative and inaccurate picture of Pakistan, especially of a neighborhood in old Karachi known as Lyari.
Sindh’s Information and Broadcasting Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon launched the project through X, describing Dhurandhar as a “textbook example of ‘propaganda cinema.’” Here, he describes how the Indian film promotes a war-like situation in the area of Lyari, which he finds very inaccurate.
Societal Relevance and Impact
Memon stated that:
“Lyari is labeled in a very negative way when in fact it is one of the most culturally rich and historically important neighborhoods in all of Karachi—and definitely in all of Pakistan.”
Lyari being a place of violence is a misconception when in fact it is a place with “rich tradition, artistic talent, athletic skill, and a strong sense of community.”
Mera Lyari is an initiative to highlight all these hidden truths. Through these stories of peace, resilience, and pride, this movie tries to bring out the reality of not just Lyari but this part of Pakistan, which in fact has enriched Pakistan’s social fabric in a way that very few other localities have.
A Power-Packed Creative Team Behind Mera Lyari
The project boasts a stellar cast which gives it credibility and expectations. The project stars the legendary actor Nadeem Ejaz and seasoned actress Samina Ahmed, and emerging actress Dananeer Mobeen, who has gained many hearts with her authentic performance.
The production is being brought forth by Ayesha Omar, an actress and producer in her own right. The production is a major step in socially relevant films being produced. The script and direction will be handled by Abu Aleeha, famous for being different with his storyline and thoughts.
The official posters shared by the minister have generated interest on social media, with people appreciating this initiative and welcoming a storyline where instead of being vilified, Karachi gets highlighted.
Cultural Diplomacy Through Film
Moreover, aside from being entertainment, Mera Lyari is a manifestation of cultural diplomacy. With the increasing role of movies in influencing people’s perspectives all over the world, the response of Sindh shows cinema’s invaluable utility in being a tool for truth, representation, and national pride.
Rather than relying on rhetoric, the government prefers storytelling—letting art speak louder than allegations. Such a strategy not only defies negative narrative constructions but encourages local film producers to claim Pakistan’s stories.
Anticipation Mounts Ahead of Release
As Mera Lyari is all set to hit screens next month, the film is making rounds in circles for being a socially relevant film. For many Pakistanis, this film represents their defiance against being illogically portrayed.
As people wait for this film to arrive, it is very evident that Mera Lyari film is more than a movie response because, in essence, it is a “reclaiming of their identity, dignity, and truth through Pakistani cinema in film format.
