Tensions Escalate in National Assembly Ahead of Talks

Tensions erupted in the National Assembly on Monday as members of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) clashed over key issues ahead of the third round of talks scheduled for January 16. The confrontation began when Leader of the Opposition Omar Ayub Khan raised concerns about the government’s inaction on serious matters, including the alleged sniper killings of 13 people in Islamabad’s Blue Area on November 26. He pointed out that no commission had been formed to investigate the incident. Khan also accused the government of torturing detainees from the May 9 protests.

Khan further criticized ministers for commenting on the £190 million corruption case involving PTI founder Imran Khan and his associates, despite the case’s judgment being delayed multiple times. He argued that the government’s focus should be on investigating PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif’s Avenfield apartments in London rather than focusing on PTI issues.

In response, Defense Minister Khawaja Asif accused the opposition of using the National Assembly’s Question Hour for political speeches instead of addressing real issues. He questioned the opposition’s sincerity in negotiations, stating that their behavior made meaningful talks difficult. Asif emphasized that the government would not be pressured and stressed that the National Assembly should follow established procedures.

During the session, PTI lawmakers, part of the Sunni Ittehad Council, continued their protests, shouting slogans in the National Assembly. PTI MNA Iqbal Afridi tried to disrupt proceedings by raising a quorum issue, but the session proceeded as planned, with the government and opposition continuing their verbal exchanges.

This heated exchange comes after stalled negotiations between the government and PTI. The third round of talks on January 16 is expected to focus on PTI’s written demands.
