Keely Hodgkinson Wins BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2024

Keely Hodgkinson Named BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2024

Keely Hodgkinson, the Olympic 800m gold medalist, has been named BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2024, celebrating a record-breaking and inspirational season that culminated in her first global title in Paris.

The 22-year-old from Leigh made history this year, overcoming years of near-misses to claim Olympic gold. Hodgkinson’s victory in Paris was the highlight of an extraordinary year, which also saw her defend her European 800m title in Rome and set a new British record of 1:54.61 at the London Diamond League, making her the sixth-fastest woman in history.

“I’m in a bit of shock,” Hodgkinson said during her acceptance speech on BBC One. “I’m more excited for my coach because I wouldn’t be here without his guidance. This year has been incredible, and I achieved everything I set out to do on the outdoor track. I hope you loved watching Paris.”

Keely Hodgkinson: A Year of Triumph

Hodgkinson’s Olympic triumph in Paris ended a three-year quest for gold after her silver-medal performance in Tokyo 2020. In between, she won two World Championship silver medals, solidifying her as a top contender on the world stage. Her gold in Paris not only marked a personal milestone but also made history for Team GB. It was their first Olympic track title since Mo Farah’s 2016 5,000m and 10,000m double and the first by a British woman in athletics since Jessica Ennis-Hill’s gold in 2012.

Her dominance didn’t stop there. Hodgkinson continued to shine in Europe, defending her European title in Rome and breaking her own British record at the London Diamond League, inching closer to the 1983 world record.

A Bright Future Ahead for Keely Hodgkinson

Keely Hodgkinson’s remarkable achievements were recognized alongside her coaches, Trevor Painter and Jenny Meadows, who were awarded Coach of the Year. Looking ahead, Hodgkinson’s potential is limitless, with the 2025 World Championships offering further opportunities to cement her legacy as one of the greatest athletes of her generation.

With her determination and focus, fans are excited to see what Keely Hodgkinson will achieve next as she continues to push the boundaries of middle-distance running.
