Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced on Friday that Al-Qadir University is now under her control following the verdict in the £190 million Al-Qadir Trust case. Speaking at a ceremony in Okara, Maryam Nawaz revealed that the university would become part of the government’s educational initiatives, with a focus on providing scholarships to deserving students. She emphasized her commitment to improving education in the region and ensuring that students have access to the resources they need to succeed.
Maryam Nawaz also addressed the current political climate, urging the nation to prioritize unity and peace over division and unrest. She criticized previous leadership for inciting violence, stating that young people were encouraged to attack police forces and blindly follow what they saw on social media. Reflecting on her family’s political journey, Maryam spoke about the challenges they’ve faced, particularly the alleged corruption charges that led to her father Nawaz Sharif’s ouster despite his 45 years of service to the country. “I was punished for standing by my father,” she added.
Maryam Nawaz also criticized Imran Khan, claiming he is the first prime minister to be caught “red-handed” in corruption. She then reflected on her own difficult experiences, particularly during her time in jail. She recounted how she and her father endured harsh conditions, including surveillance cameras in her cell and limited meals. “It’s good that my weight has reduced,” Maryam humorously noted.
Her comments came after a court ruling in the £190 million case, where former Prime Minister Imran Khan was sentenced to 14 years in prison, and his wife, Bushra Bibi, was given a 7-year sentence.
