Sony could be coming back to the handheld console.
Sony’s PlayStation Portal is made for remote play, allowing you to stream PS5 games over Wi-Fi. However, it is quite different from being a true successor to the PSP and PS Vita. Bloomberg recently reported that Sony is exploring the idea of making a handheld gaming console that can play full PS5 games directly.
This rumoured device, unlike Portal, would enable local gameplay, eliminating the need for an active internet connection. This would turn it into a real portable console rather than just a streaming device.
Sources close to the project indicate that the PlayStation Portal is still a few years away from its release. There’s a heads-up that Sony could stop development before it even reaches consumers. Given how early it is in the process right now.
The console gaming market is making a comeback, thanks to the popularity of the Nintendo Switch and newer gadgets like the Steam Deck and Asus ROG Ally. Microsoft is said to be developing a handheld Xbox console, indicating that competition in the portable gaming market is about to intensify soon.
Keeping that in mind, it’s worth mentioning that Microsoft’s handheld console won’t be out for a few more years. Considering the ongoing competition between PlayStation and Xbox. Both companies could likely launch their new versions at the same time in the future. At that time, other gaming consoles will have improved a lot, making us expect the arrival of something really impressive soon.
