Foreign Hunter Pays $219,000 for Kashmir Markhor Hunt in Chitral

A foreign hunter successfully hunted a Kashmir markhor in the Ghairat Gol area of Lower Chitral, with the support of the Ghairat Conservation Committee and the guidance of Farooq Nabi, the District Forest Officer (DFO) for Wildlife in Lower Chitral. The hunting activity took place within the jurisdiction of the Ghairat Conservation Committee, specifically at the Kashmir Markhor point.

Spanish hunter Christian Pablo Abello Gamizo was granted a permit to hunt the Kashmir markhor, paying a substantial fee of USD 219,000, or approximately PKR 61.25 million, for the privilege. The markhor he hunted was a nine-year-old male with impressive horns measuring 41.5 inches in length.

A key aspect of the hunting program is that a significant portion of the revenue generated is reinvested into local community development. Specifically, 80% of the funds from the permit fees are used to support local projects, benefiting the people of the area. The remaining 20% is allocated to the government treasury. This model ensures that the benefits of hunting go beyond the immediate conservation efforts and contribute to the long-term well-being of the local population.

In a related note, in December of the previous year, an American hunter set a record by paying PKR 75 million for a hunting permit to target a markhor in the Toshi Shah Conservation Area. This marked the highest fee ever recorded for markhor hunting in the history of Chitral.

Trophy hunting, when managed properly, can provide valuable funds for conservation and community development, as evidenced by these recent hunting activities. The regulation of hunting fees and the distribution of proceeds play a crucial role in ensuring that both wildlife and local communities benefit from these programs.
