Punjab Rescues Stranded Indus Blind Dolphins

To protect the Indus Blind Dolphins near the Taunsa Barrage on the Indus River, Punjab Wildlife has increased its monitoring efforts. This comes after the recent rescue of five stranded dolphins, which are now being closely watched.

A complete fishing ban has been enforced in the buffer zone of the Taunsa Barrage. Additionally, staff from Punjab Wildlife, Fisheries, and WWF have removed illegal fishing nets from the area to protect the dolphins and other aquatic life.

The five Indus Blind Dolphins, including two adults and three calves, became stranded due to low water levels downstream of the Taunsa Barrage. The wildlife team quickly moved the dolphins to deeper parts of the river, ensuring their safety.

Muhammad Hussain Gishkori, Deputy Director of Punjab Wildlife in DG Khan, explained the situation to Express News. He shared that local NGO workers and wildlife staff alerted them about the stranded dolphins. The team traveled 200 kilometers to the site, where they found the dolphins trapped in an area with dangerously low water levels.

Thankfully, all five dolphins were safely relocated to deeper waters. Gishkori also mentioned that they observed six more dolphins in the area, suggesting the population could be over ten.

In addition to removing the fishing nets, Gishkori emphasized that the Taunsa Barrage is a protected zone where fishing and hunting are banned. He was relieved that the dolphins had not been caught in the nets and assured that monitoring efforts would continue to prevent future risks to these endangered dolphins.
