Yousaf Raza Gilani Goes Scot-Free in All TDAP Mega Corruption Cases

Senate Chairman and ex-Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani Cleared in TDAP Mega Corruption Scandal

In a historic verdict that registers the surrender of a long jail battle, the Federal Anti-Corruption Court has acquitted Senate Chairman and ex-Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani in all cases related to the TDAP mega corruption scandal. The verdict brings a chapter to an end that lasted more than 14 years, involved 26 crook cases, and hung over the political career of one of Pakistan’s most resplendent leaders.

The Scandal That Shook the Nation

The Pakistan Trade Development Authority (TDAP) scandal first made the headlines in 2009, charging embezzlement and corruption within the organization. In 2013, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) formally registered cases. Gilani, who was Prime Minister between 2008 and 2012, was once named in the outstanding challan in 2015 for receiving Rs five million in commissions through bogus export subsidies.

    Court Gives Final Verdict

While Gilani had already been acquitted in 12 of the 26 cases, the Federal Anti-Corruption Court delivered a decisive blow to the final expenses with the aid of acquitting him in the last 14 cases. The court docket referred to lack of concrete proof emphasizing that no cash had been ever traced to Gilani’s account. Also, the crucial witness, who had become approver, was previously also turned into an accused, in the same way diluting the prosecution case.

In its observation, the court mentioned:

“It has been 14 years, and yet the evidence against all accused remains the same. Justice delayed can’t be justice denied anymore.”

Farooq H. Naik: “Justice Has Prevailed”

Addressing the press, senior lawyer Farooq H. Naik, who had defended Gilani during the case, welcomed the verdict as a triumph of justice.

    > “These have been frivolous cases. The ruling by the court is a proof of Yousaf Raza Gilani’s innocence. We thank the honorable judge who observed the fact and brought justice.

Naik further raised fundamental questions regarding the operation of certain courts, calling for legislative changes and the phasing out of such courts that, he contended, operate except the monitoring of abusive court docket chief justices.

Gilani Breaks Silence: “I Forgive, But I Don’t Forget”

Minutes after the verdict, Gilani spoke to the media graciously and magnanimously. He was thankful for the support he received during the long prison ordeal and commended his felony team for their dedication.

“False cases have been lodged against me, but truth has finally prevailed. I am a supporter of these individuals who lodged the cases I won’t leave them. I concur with in democracy and in due process.”

He also taunted the need for a law that sanctions humans who become promissory witnesses but fail to provide evidence.

“Such witnesses must undergo the same punishment as the accused if they are unable to prove their allegations.”

A Wider Debate: Time for Judicial Reform?

The judgment no longer only acquits Yousaf Raza Gilani but also triggers renewed debate about judicial proceedings and the presence of separate courts within Pakistan. With imprisonment delays reaching more than a decade and a half, most felony professionals and politicians now bring to the table the notion that full judicial reforms are the desire of the day.

Justice Restored, But Lessons to Learn

The acquittal of Yousaf Raza Gilani on the TDAP mega corruption cases brings to a close one of the most sensationalized jail fights in Pakistan’s political history. Whilst it gives the Senate Chairman a moment of redemption, it also casts a critical light on the lack of effectiveness and politicization of accountability process in the nation. As Pakistan moves forward, this case will be remembered as an illustration of the remarkable balance between justice and political maneuver and of the urgent need to transform institutions that allow cases to go on for more than a decade without resolution.
