Maryam Nawaz Introduces Historic Family Visit Policy for Punjab Prisoners

Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz permits Quality Family Visit Policy within the Jail Compound

In a highly controversial and unorthodox gesture, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has sanctioned a Family Visit Policy allowing long-term inmates to temporarily reside with their wives and small children within the jail compound. The revolutionary reform seeks to inject sensitivity into the penal system, prioritizing familial ties and prisoner rehabilitation.

As per a Punjab Home Department spokesperson, the convicts staying in prison for over five years will also be eligible for three visits from their families every year, each lasting three consecutive days. The prison allows the inmates to stay with their wives and children aged below six years in special family rooms provided at the prison.

    Humanizing the Justice System

This progressive project forms part of a larger vision by the provincial government to transform the justice system and strengthen family bonds, even in prison. The underlying assumption driving this policy is that continued family contact has a crucial role to play in curbing recidivism and enhancing mental health among prisoners.

Maryam Nawaz, who is known for her progressive thinking regarding social reforms, focused on emotional healing and rehabilitation as opposed to mere punishment. The government of her administration is creating a new precedent where prisoners are not only considered prisoners but also parents, spouses, and members of society.

    Application and Approval Process

In order to benefit from this humane facility, either the prisoner or his wife will have to file a proper request with the jail authorities. On preliminary screening, the concerned Deputy Commissioner will refer the application, which will then have to obtain written permission of the Commissioner of the concerned division.

This orderly process of approval provides security and transparency while according respect to families who have long suffered the anguish of physical separation because of imprisonment.

Free Meals and Private Space: A Gesture of Dignity

In addition to time with their loved ones, the inmates and their families will also receive free meals during their stay in the family rooms. These rooms are expected to offer basic comfort and privacy, reflecting a more humane approach to incarceration.

This program benefits the prisoners themselves but also their children particularly those aged below six by allowing them to have an ongoing relationship with their parent despite the physical obstacle of being in prison. Experts attribute that this policy can have a positive effect on the psychological growth of such children.

    Public Reaction and Expert Opinions

The policy has been widely accepted by the public and civil rights organizations. Social activists, psychologists, and lawyers have termed it to be a long-overdue initiative towards contemporary prison reforms. In toughening the family bond, they contend, the government is indeed addressing head-on the causal factors of emotional trauma and rehabilitation issues post-jail.

A Lahore-based criminologist said, “Such policies can drastically reduce recidivism. When prisoners are reminded of their roles as fathers and husbands, it fuels a sense of responsibility and hope.”

    A Model for Other Provinces?

Punjab’s Family Visit Policy may well be a blueprint for other provinces. As attention shifts from punitive measures to all-round rehabilitation, the initiative can trigger a country-wide dialogue on prison reform with empathy and family ties as the foundation.

The Family Visit Policy in Punjab Jails heralds a new paradigm: how society perceives imprisonment. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s decision marked that the institution re-emphasizes humanity that is restorative and understands the fact rehabilitation is more sustainable when compassion cannot be left outside the prison walls.
Maybe this is a bold step that will now pave the way for future reforms of justice across Pakistan.
