The Supreme Court of Pakistan has revealed a significant rise in the number of pending cases, which has now hit an unprecedented total of 60,508. In a span of merely 15 days, we have seen an increase of 861 new cases added to the current backlog. The report reveals that the largest portion, 33,269 civil appeals, remain unresolved. Currently, 10,335 criminal appeals, 28 suo motu cases, and 2,064 review petitions await resolution.
Furthermore, the Human Rights Cell is in the process of reviewing 134 applications, while there are still 3,361 jail petitions that remain unresolved. The Supreme Court is presently dealing with a considerable backlog of cases, which has resulted in the National Assembly deciding to postpone the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill 2024. On the previous day, the Senate put forth a bill designed to expand the number of judges in the Court with the intention of tackling the increasing backlog of cases that has been accumulating.
