The New Chapter for Poverty Reduction in Pakistan for Empowering the Poorest
In a significant move against poverty, Pakistan has secured $330 million extra financing from the Asian Development Bank (ADB). It will help strengthen the country’s flagship social safety programme, the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), and extend its reach to the most vulnerable populations – women and children.
Strengthening the Integrated Social Protection Development Programme
The financing types phase of the Integrated Social Protection Development Programme (ISPDP), first launched in December 2021. Awesome growth has already been recorded in the programme’s engagement in intergenerational poverty and improved human capital development. Similar grassroots-level initiatives will similarly be empowered by the infusion of clean money, thereby availing climate-resilient and adaptive social safety systems.
Yevgeniy Zhukov, ADB’s Director General for Central and West Asia, said, “This programme strengthens Pakistan’s efforts in enhancing human capital improvement and reducing intergenerational poverty, particularly for females who are disproportionately affected all through financial hardships.”
A Proven Track Record
Since its inception, ISPDP has confirmed full-size success. The programme has extended academic access for underprivileged children, increased fitness and nutrition packages for female and girls, and reinforced BISP’s inside operations, along with the economic administration and procurement practices.
