At Bølgen Sustainability Center, Norwegian language learning comes alive with a mix of accents from across the globe. Here, language students not only enhance their Norwegian but also collaborate on projects supporting sustainability and the green transition.
Bølgen is a Hub for Social Sustainability
“Our language practice program aligns with our commitment to social sustainability,” says Solveig Nilsen, General Manager at Bølgen. “It’s a mutually beneficial initiative where we connect with talented individuals from around the world, gaining fresh perspectives while helping them integrate into Norwegian society.”
Let’s meet Omer Waqar, a language trainee at Bølgen, Marketer with Global Experience, From Pakistan to Norway!
In 2023, Omer Waqar and his family relocated from Pakistan to Kristiansand, Norway, seeking a brighter future. Omer brings with him over a decade of experience in marketing and advertising, including a nine-year tenure at Spark Foundry, a leading global advertising agency under the Publicist Group.
Despite English being the primary language of his profession, Omer is now focused on mastering Norwegian to advance his career.
A Solid Professional Background
Omer holds a master’s degree in media and advertising from the University of Management and Technology in Lahore. His career started in 2011 as a media planner at a local advertising agency, and he later contributed to campaigns for diverse clients across public and private sectors in Pakistan.
Why did he choose Norway?
Omer’s move to Norway was driven by the desire to secure a better life for his wife and their four-year-old son. Now settled in Kristiansand, he enjoys learning about different cultures, building new connections, and exploring Norway’s stunning natural landscapes.
The Road to His Dream Job!
Learning the Language
For Omer, mastering Norwegian is the key to unlocking career opportunities in Norway. “My goal is to work in advertising again, ideally in an international setting where I can use both Norwegian and English,” he shares.
Gaining Hands-On Experience at Bølgen
Omer is currently interning at Bølgen, where he contributes to communications and marketing. He creates engaging content for social media platforms like Facebook and LinkedIn, manages event promotions, and hones his Norwegian through daily interactions with colleagues.
I’m thrilled to be part of Bølgen,” says Omer. This experience helps me grow professionally while building confidence in speaking Norwegian.
Language Practice Program: A Gateway to Integration
Offered by the Kongsgård School Center, the language practice program combines Norwegian courses (A2/B1 level) with business Norwegian and real-world work experience. Students spend three days in the classroom and two days gaining practical experience, making it an excellent stepping stone for integration into Norwegian work culture.
Omer’s Vision for the Future
Omer’s ambitions extend beyond personal growth. He envisions:
- Becoming fluent in Norwegian.
- Building a strong professional network.
- Securing his own car and home in Norway.
But most importantly, he dreams of a better world one with clean air, accessible clean water, and sustainable living standards for all.
Reflecting on global environmental challenges, Omer points out stark contrasts between Asia and Norway. “In Asia, air pollution, water scarcity, and poverty are significant issues,” he says. “Norway sets an example with its clean environment, waste management, and focus on reducing emissions. I want to contribute to this important work.”
Omer’s journey is a testament to the power of resilience, learning, and collaboration. Through Bølgen’s program, he’s building a bridge between cultures and striving to create a sustainable future.
