Buckingham Palace has once again highlighted amazing people making a difference in society. On Tuesday, the palace announced that King Charles III had invested the distinguished Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) on 103-year-old Havildar Major Rajindar Singh Dhatt, in recognition of his lifetime provider to the South Asian community in the UK.
Honoring a Lifetime of Dedication
The journey of Havildar Major Rajindar Singh Dhatt was declared superb. He was born in 1921 in pre-partitioned India. The life took a turn when World War II broke out, pushing him to join the British Army. His exceptional managing abilities led him to rise into the rank of Havildar Major (Sergeant Major) by the year 1943.
Rajindar performed a crucial role in the Far East campaign, particularly in the Battle of Kohima in northeast India, where he also led the Allied Forces in breaking through the Japanese defenses. After the war, he returned to India before finally settling in Hounslow, UK, in 1963. His involvement did not end there; he co-founded the Undivided Indian Ex-Servicemen’s Association, a group of individuals looking for British-Indian veterans from all walks of life to come under one banner.
“At Windsor Castle today, The King invested 103-year-old Havildar Major Rajindar Singh Dhatt as an MBE for offerings to the South Asian Community in the UK,” read a statement from the Palace.
Prince Harry’s acquaintance
The news breaks coincidentally with the first episodes of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s new docu-series on Netflix titled, POLO. That explores the exclusive polo circuit along with Harry’s acquaintance and polo star, Nacho Figueras during an American Open Polo Tournament being held in Wellington Florida.
Amid the sports activities drama and camaraderie, the docuseries subtly displays Prince Harry’s evolving relationship with the royal family. His participation in the sequence has been interpreted via some as a symbolic distancing from royal traditions, regardless of the family’s long-standing connection to the sport.
A Symbolic Intersection of Stories
The timing of these events underlines a beautiful confluence of culture and modernity within the royal story. On one hand, King Charles’s awareness of a war hero marks the role of the monarchy in paying homage to historical and social contributions. On the other, Prince Harry’s involvement in a world docuseries marks a shift toward current storytelling and private expression.
As for the stories of King Charles and Prince Harry, these stories are different in terms of tone and theme but represent similar subject matter about a life of service and dedication- one to the community and the other to passions for one individual.
