    In a dramatic turn of events, a major protest in Dhaka turned violent as protesters damaged and set furnace to the old residence of Bangladesh’s founding leader, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The house was once turned into the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum, but it was still located at the heart of burgeoning political unrest in the country.

     

    Thousands March in ‘Bulldozer Procession’ Protest

    The attack occurred on Wednesday evening when thousands of protesters congregated outside the 32 Dhanmondi residence, following a call on social media for a “Bulldozer Procession.” The rally coincided with an online speech by deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina, daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

    Sheikh Hasina’s Emotional Speech Amid Crisis

    Addressing the nation, Hasina condemned the destruction of her family’s ancient home, emphasizing that whilst constructions can be demolished, records can’t be erased. She criticized the present day administration beneath Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus, suggesting that the student-led motion was once being used as a device for a large political agenda.

    A Symbol of Bangladesh’s Independence Under Attack

    The 32 Dhanmondi dwelling holds sizeable historic value, having served as Mujib’s political base at some stage in the country’s warfare for independence. The house, already a web page of tragedy following Mujib’s assassination in 1975, grew to be a countrywide landmark below Awami League rule.

    Hasina, who has been in exile in India since her authorities were overthrown last year, appealed to students to return to their books instead of being used as political pawns. Meanwhile, the caretaker government has announced moves to extradite Hasina and other Awami League members who have returned to Bangladesh.
