ISLAMABAD, Nov 20 A court in Pakistan has granted bail to former prime minister Imran Khan. Who was jailed over a case involving the illegal sale of state gifts. A
ccording to his party on Wednesday.
Khan, 71, has been in prison since August 2023, but it’s unclear if the troubled politician will be released, as he’s facing several other charges. Which includes inciting violence against the state.
“If the official order comes in today. His family and supporters will reach out to the authorities for his release,” said Salman Safdar. One of his party’s lawyers, to reporters. According to Safdar, all the cases against Khan have either granted him bail or resulted in his acquittal.
Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, from the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz party, mentioned on Geo TV. Khan doesn’t have bail in cases related to his supporters allegedly planning riots after his arrest in May last year.
Khan asserts that all the cases against him since his ousting in 2022 are merely political ploys to keep him in prison.
The Islamabad High Court granted bail in the Toshakhana, or state Treasury, case on Wednesday.
There are several versions and charges related to claims that Khan and his wife unlawfully obtained and sold gifts valued at over 140 million rupees ($501,000) from state possession. Which he received during his time as prime minister from 2018 to 2022.
After receiving a three-year sentence in late 2023 for a different version of the same case, Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi. Now face a 14-year sentence on those charges.
