Pakistan is shaken by protests and arrest warrants
The Islamabad Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) took an unusual move after last week’s tense rallies in the federal capital. it issued non-bailable arrest warrants for Imran Khan, his wife Bushra Bibi, and 94 other people, including the founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). This action marks a dramatic shift in Pakistani politics given the growing tensions between the administration and the opposition.
Deaths That Took Place During the Panic
Including a few Rangers members and a police officer six individuals were murdered during the protests, and the killings provoked controversial debates. Police officers’ claims of excessive force and demonstrators’ denials of violence deepened the divide.
Requests for Arrests of Key PTI Officials
Judge Tahir Abbas Sipra directed the ATC to issue arrest warrants in accordance with the Anti-Terrorism Act, the Peaceful Assembly and Public Order Act of 2024, and the Pakistan Penal Code. Former President Arif Alvi is one among the well-known people on the warrant list.
The PTI’s chairman is Barrister Gohar.
The opposition’s leader is Omar Ayub.
Asad Qaiser, the former speaker of the National Assembly, was accompanied by a number of other senior PTI figures. The charges include rioting, criminal intimidation, and acts of terrorism, along with allegations that protesters attacked police and disturbed public order.
